Over the last three years Estonia has paid a lot of attention to waste. They developed a new waste act and a new packaging act, because of the strict rules and goals that the EU had made they were forced to do so.
The purpose of these new acts was to promote the recycling process. Because of the new packaging act there were also new waste management centers build. These centers are meeting the latest environmental standards.
Estonia is in a partnership with other countries around the Baltic Sea. They started a forum called “The Baltic Environmental Forum” (BEF). The purpose of the BEF Group is to act in different fields regarding to a better environmental area. One of these fields is Waste.
Environmental Policy
The strategic goals that were made are based on the decisions that the EU made in the year 2004. The purpose of these acts was to discourage the generation of waste and encourage them to recycle and reuse waste for a better environment.
In the year 2008 the Governments of the Baltic States developed a new waste management plan.
The decisions that were made were not that different from the European policy. What changed was that the governments gave more responsibility and more freedom for improvisation for the Estonian local counties.
